Political Prisoner updates and Malcolm's Message to the Grassroots

Download Podcast

On this day in 1963, Malcolm X gave a speech entitled "Message to the Grassroots" to the Northern Negro Grass Roots Leadership Conference in Detroit, Michigan. In this historic speech, Malcolm X contrasted the difference between a "Black Revolution" and a "Negro Revolution". He contrasted the "House Negro" and the "Field Negro" during slavery and during his generation.

He also criticized the 1963 March on Washington which was taken over from Grass Roots organizers and given to civil rights leaders whom the Kennedy administration and white liberals deemed safe and non-controversial to the liberal whites. Tonight as we review "Message to the Grassroots" and update you on political prisoner related issues on Political Prisoner Radio.

Move 9 Mondays continues. The fight is not over yet call the Parole Board this Monday 11/11/13 at (717) 772-4343 and demand The Release Of The Move 9. Quick note Monday the parole board office will be closed but we can still call and leave our messages on the voicemail so let's flood their message board on Monday.

TELL CDCR THAT THE PRACTICE OF ISSUING 115 WRITE-UPS FOR PARTICIPATING IN THE HUNGER STRIKE IS OUTRAGEOUS!

Please contact M. D. Stainer, Director of the Division of Adult Institutions at CDCR. Your voice needs to be heard by the people making decisions! Tell him to end this policy of punishing people for refusing their meals in nonviolent protest, and to reverse the 115s that were given out. Let him know that you are distressed to hear that about his policy of issuing 115 write-ups, further oppressing the peaceful hunger strikers.

The Legacy of the Black Panther Party

Download Podcast

The Black Panther Party for Self-Defense was a black revolutionary social political organization which was active maninly in the United States from 1966 until 1982. It also included international chapters. It was founded in Oakland, California by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale on October 15, 1966 and the organization initially set forth a doctrine calling primarily for the protection of black neighborhoods from police brutality.

Tonight I am joined by one of its former members Ras Munyiga Nosakhere who began selling newspapers for the party he was just ten years old. Ras Munyiga Nosakhere is now active with the Black Autonomy Federation. Many former panthers are still being held as political prisoners by the United States government and some are more known than others but all deserve our attention and advocacy.

Black Civil Rights organizations and political prisoners

Download Podcast

Jesse Jackson is off to South America to free a former US soldier from FARC but has never lifted a finger to help political prisoners and prisoners of war held by the US Government. He is not alone, none of the so-called civil rights organizations have campaigned on behalf of our freedom fighters, many of whom are elderly and in poor health. Minister Farrakhan speaks up for Political Prisoners and says he will continue to do so. Iran releases political prisoners, the United States still denies it has any.

Israel incarcerating thousands of Political Prisoners including children

Download Podcast

Sharing some of the latest updates on Political Prisoner cases and related news.

Journalist Saed Bannoura of  the International Middle East Media Center joins us tonight to discuss a recent report issued by The Census Department of the Palestinian Ministry of Detainees. The report says “Israeli soldiers kidnapped 2436 Palestinians since the beginning of this year, and that the number of detainees currently held by Israel is 5200” which includes at least 220 children, some under the age of 16.

Al Jezeera English published an article on the recent election of Mayor Chokwe Lumumba who is a former vice president of the Republic of New Afrika and a co-founder of the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement. Some in the Black power community believe you can change the system, the system changes you but it will certainly make for an interesting case study of when Black radicalism intersects with mainstream politics.

The Hollow Ringing of America's So-Called Freedom Bell

Download Podcast

Presidents of America's imperialistic government gathered yesterday in Washington, DC at the site of Dr. King's "I have a Dream" speech on the steps of the Lincoln monument along with prominent showcased African Americans to put on a show. The ringing of the so-called "Freedom Bells" rang hollow for all the US Government held political prisoners and prisoners of the FBI war against the Black liberation movement and other left leaning organizations.

The event was a mockery of the Black people who dared to struggle during that period dying and losing their freedom as a result of taking on the most oppressive government the in the modern world. The struggle continues for true Black Liberation and Freedom. It also rang hollow for the many innocent people swept up and imprisoned in America's so-called War against Terror.

We will talk to El Hajj Mauri Saalakhan, director of operations, The Peace Thru Justice Foundation.

Eric Holder's comments on sick and elderly and Political Prisoners

Download Podcast

Tonight I will be joined by Bro. Akinyele Umoja about several topics including Bro. Abdullah Majid whom Jericho NY has issued a medical alert for and asking people to call and advocate on his behalf so that he may get the medical attention he needs which is being denied.

Attorney General Eric Holder recently announced that the prison population can be reduced by releasing sick and elderly prisoners, many of our political prisoners certainly meet that criteria.

Marcus Garvey's birthday is coming up on the August 17. Bro. Garvey was a victim of COINTELPRO tactics before there was a official program called COINTELPRO, which is why most of our Black political prisoners are behind bars today.

Bro. Akinyele Umoja is the author of "We Will Shoot Back: Armed Resistance in the Mississippi Freedom Movement".

COINTELPRO Study session

Download Podcast

The FBI has used always used covert operations against domestic political groups since its inception. However, covert operations under the official title COINTELPRO started in August of 1956 and while it is a common belief that it ended in 1971. An argument can be made that COINTELPRO still exists.

Tonight Political Prisoner Radio will conduct a study session of the documentary COINTELPRO - The FBI's War on Black America. The purpose of this study session is to look back at the tactics used by COINTELPRO and determine if and how the Black community is still impacted today.

Black Panther in Africa Pete O'Neal's message to the masses

Download Podcast

Political Prisoner Radio kicks off the 34th anniversary of Black August which is the annual commemoration of the liberation struggle of African people inside the United States. We had an opportunity to speak with a former Black Panther living in exile, Comrade Pete O'Neal.

Pete O'Neal is a former Black Panther living in exile in Africa. He was the chairman of the Kansas City chapter of the Black Panther Party. He was a target of the FBI illegal program known as COINTELPRO. On October 30, 1969, he was arrested for the transporting of a gun across state lines (under a law implemented only two weeks prior to his arrest). He fled to Algeria, a year later and then to Tanzania.

We reached out to Bro. Pete to discuss various issues related to Political Prisoners and victims of COINTELPRO who are still being held by the US government. We discussed the lack of movement from the masses to demand the release of US held political prisoners.

We also discussed a number of related issues including the bounty on Assata Shakur, another former Black Panther living in exile.

Black Liberation Movement & Stand Your Ground

Download Podcast
In the wake of the fall out from Trayvon Martin's killer George Michael Zimmerman being set free by Florida Jury and system designed for injustice, many have been talking about boycotting Florida until it repeals Stand Your Ground self-defense laws. I thought to myself, I wonder what Malcolm X, Huey Newton and Fred F. Williams would be saying today about Black so-called leaders urging folks to give up their guns and concede the ground.

I also want to talk about why members of the Black liberation movement who are not confined not speaking up for their comrades who are being tortured and denied release from these prison hells in America.
Not all, but a prominent few I've noticed on Facebook who don't say one word about comrades who are sick and dying and denied compassionate release because of their past activities as members of various political organizations. Why is that?

Joining me tonight for discussion on these issues involving our political prisoners and their legacy is Shaka Shakur. Shaka Shakur was born August 12, 1969 and raised in the Bronx, New York. He is a father, community organizer and a revolutionary. He is the founder of The people's survival program and Maroon multi media. He is an alumni member of the Black Panther collective and former chairperson of the NYC chapter of the New Black Panther Party.

He is also a member of the hip-hop group Maroon Society and founder of the Gye NyaMe University. He conducts weekly political education classes, which are free to the public at the Assata Shakur cultural center in City College located on 137 & Amsterdam Ave, Rm. 3201 every Tuesday at 7pm.

Political prisoner Herman Wallace and is dying from cancer and has been locked away in solitary confinement on a Louisiana prison plantation for 41 years because of his political beliefs. He was a recently featured on Melissa Harris Perry's program and the subject of an Amnesty International appeal to the State of Louisiana for a compassionate release based on Mr. Wallace's age and worsening health condition.

You can take action by signing the Amnesty International petition calling for Compassionate Release for Herman Wallace.

Cases like the Angola 3 help to highlight the brutal and sadistic mentality of those in power through out the United States.

We revisit an interview conducted earlier this year with Robert King, the only Angola 3 member to be released from the prison plantation.

Tarek Mehanna sent to prison for expressing a political opinion

Tonight we are joined by Laila Murad to discuss the efforts to free Tarek Mehanna. Mehanna case is particularly interesting because what he was alleged to have done. The US government tried to link Mehanna to Al Qaeda, this of course was before the US started supporting Al Qaeda and Al Qaeda linked militants in Libya and now Syria.

According to reports, Mehanna has stated that he does not support the worldview of Al Qaeda, but that he does support Muslims' right to fight the U.S. military invasion and occupation of Iraq as well as other foreign military forces in Iraq.

Mehanna was said to have began to translated and posted online materials described by prosecutors as Al Qaeda propaganda. In April 2012, Mehanna was sentenced in a Boston federal court on four terrorism-related charges and three others related to lying to FBI and other U.S. federal officials.

The ACLU issued a statement after his sentencing which read, "Under the government's theory of the case, ordinary people--including writers and journalists, academic researchers, translators, and even ordinary web surfers--could be prosecuted for researching or translating controversial and unpopular ideas."

Activists Sabrina Green and Ralph Poynter on Cuban Five and Lynne Stewart

Download Podcast

Sabrina Green will join us to discuss the updates concerning the case of The Cuban Five. The Cuban Five consists Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González and René González. The men were on a mission to investigate terrorist groups among the Cubans in Florida who fled from the island following the Cuban Revolution led by Fidel Castro and Ernesto "Che" Guevara.

Terrorist based in Florida were suspected of being behind attacks on hotels in Cuban and evidence implicated several CIA-linked anti-Castro Cuban exiles being behind the deadliest terrorist airline attack in the Western Hemisphere. All 78 people on board Cubana de Aviación Flight 455 died including children. The United States would charge members of the Cuban Five with conspiracy to commit espionage, conspiracy to commit murder, acting as an agent of a foreign government, and other illegal activities in the United States.

Recently new evidence surfaced that the US government through the Broadcasting Board of Governors was secretly paying prominent Miami journalists who were saturating the Miami media where the trail was conducted with highly inflammatory reports that were prejudicial to the Cuban Five impeding their right to a fair trial. The US State Department is refusing to release documents that prove the government conducted a propaganda war in the media against the Cuban Five.

Ralph Poynter, activist and husband of people’s lawyer Lynne Stewart will update us on the campaign to free her from a Texas prison, which has already approved her compassionate release due to the cancer that is spreading though her body. Lynn Stewart, an attorney by trade has built a legacy of representing poor and marginalized people whom other lawyers would not.

Stewart would be convicted on trumped up charges of conspiracy and providing material support to terrorists in 2005 and was originally sentenced to 28 months in prison. The prosecutor unhappy with the sentence appealed and Stewart would get a ten-year sentence. A campaign was launched to free her but it intensified after it was discovered cancer was spreading aggressively though her body. She was granted the compassionate release but is still being held many believe because of the federal government want to make further examples of those who stand up for justice and do comply with a system of injustice.

Raymond Luc Levasseur former leader of United Freedom Front

The United Freedom Front was active during the 70's and 80's and its co-founder, leader and former political prisoner Raymond Luc Levasseur speaks with us tonight. The group opposed racism and police brutality and terrorism against Black and poor communities. Mr. Levasseur once compared the New York City Police Department to the Klu Klux Klan and said there is no difference in the Klan lynching someone and a police officer putting a bullet in a Black man's head.

The UFF was also opposed to US Foreign police, particularly in Central America and targeted corporations that they saw as supporting apartheid in South Africa.

He will discuss his experiences as a political prisoner and the cases of his incarcerated comrades Tom Manning and Jaan Laaman.

POP is planning another protest at Cineplex 12, Newark’s only major theater which stirred up controversy after it refused to show the new film titled "MUMIA: Long Distance Revolutionary" which focuses on political prisoner Mumia Abu Jamal and his contribution as an author and commentator.

We will also get his thoughts on the recent addition of Assata Shakur to the FBI's most wanted "terrorist" list and the erection of the FBI billboards of Assata in Newark.

Finally we discuss the constantly changing stories coming from the media about the killing of Malcolm X's grandson Malcolm Shabazz who was talked into traveling to Mexico by deported Mexican activist Miguel Suarez who many say has holes in his account of what happened.
