Every four years countries who are signatories to the Convention Against Torture (CAT) are required to submit reports on how they are complying with the ban on torture and inhumane and degrading treatment or punishment of human beings.

 In August, "The UN racism watchdog has urged the US to halt the excessive use of force by police after the fatal shooting of unarmed black teen Michael Brown by a white policeman sparked riots in Ferguson, Missouri. Minorities, particularly African Americans, are victims of disparities, the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) said after examining the U.S. record. ‘Racial and ethnic discrimination remains a serious and persistent problem in all areas of life from de facto school segregation, access to health care and housing,’ Noureddine Amir, CERD committee vice chairman, told a news briefing."

 We will also speak with Attorney Bret Gote who is working on the filing to opposse the recent "Muzzle Mumia Law" in Pennsylvania which was passed to target and silence world renowned activist, political prisoner and political commentator Mumia Abu Jamal. Mr. Gote works with the Abolitionist Law Center.

Albert Woodfox sued to stop the the degrading treatment of prisoners in the past and won and now he finds himself being victimized by prison officials in Louisiana. An panel of judges is currently hearing his case to stop illegal body cavity searches that have previously been ruled unconstitutional.

The NYC Anarchist Black Cross has issued its November 2014 Illustrated Guide to Political Prisoners and Prisoners of War being held and many tortured by the United States's federal government and state prison officials. In addition to providing adults with a resource guide to locating current US political prisoners but can be used as a educational lesson for teenagers to help them learn about the history they will not learn in public school.

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett signed the repressive anti-free speech legislation deemed the "Muzzle Mumia Law". A number of groups are opposing the new law in court.

Raymond Luc Levasseur, Thomas Manning and police terrorism

Former political prisoner Raymond Luc Levasseur drops in on PP Radio again. Ray was the co-founder of The United Freedom Front which was active during the 1970’s and 1980’s. The United Freedom Front is most known for its opposition to apartheid in South Africa and its corporate supporters. Mr. Levasseur has been a vocal critic of the New York City Police Department in the past once comparing them to the white supremacist and terrorist organization Klu Klux Klan.

Ray wants the listening audience to become informed about efforts to win the freedom of political prisoner Thomas Manning who is a former member of The UFF. Manning was convicted in the killing of New Jersey police officer Philip Lamonaco. Manning’s defense showed that Officer Lamonaco empty his gun in an attempt to kill Manning and those riding in a car pulled over by Lamonaco and Manning acted in self-defense. Manning was sentenced on February 19, 1987 to 58 years in federal prison and spent a little over 27 years in prison.

Political Prisoner Tom Manning is scheduled to see the US Parole Board in November. In a recent letter he asks that people write letters supporting his release on parole. He writes “so if folks can just write their own letters expressing each ones ideas rather than all of them sounding like they read a form letter – so that they put their own voice down on paper.”

The New York Post published an editorial calling Sundiata Acoli a “Cop Killer” in a regurgitated anti-Acoli article.

The National Rasmea Defense Committee is traveling with Rasmea Odeh to court in Detroit, Michigan on Oct. 21, 2014 for an important hearing before Judge Drain. They are the public in Detroit to join Rasmea Odeh’s supporters for this rally and protest outside the court on Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2014.

The group says, “Palestine solidarity and civil liberty activists from Detroit, Chicago, Minneapolis, Grand Rapids and other Michigan cities will join Rasmea Odeh and pack the courtroom.”

A Political Prisoner Radio discussion of the latest update in the case of political prisoner, victim of racism, Sundiata Acoli who recently won an appeal against a parole board’s decision to deny Acoli parole in 2011. A Media Watch campaign has formed to monitor the Internet for negative press and police propaganda related to Acoli’s case and to stress the importance and need to heed the appellate court’s ruling as a matter of law.

Imprisoned human rights advocate, journalist and Goddard College graduate Mumia Abu-Jamal delivers commencement speech.

Johanna Fernandez joined Political Prisoner Radio, she is a professor of History at Baruch College and a political and social media analyst. As a writer, her articles have been featured on outlets like the Huffington Post. She has often been called upon to educate the public on the case of former death row prisoner, current political prisoner, author and journalist Mumia Abu-Jamal. Mumia was chosen and gave the 2014 commencement speech. Students chose Mumia Abu-Jamal and the faculty of Goddard College in Plainfield, Vermont upheld the democratic process despite bullying from law enforcement groups and their supporters.

Mumia Abu-Jamal received his Bachelor of Arts from Goddard in 1996, was selected democratically to give the commencement speech by the fall 2014 graduating class.

UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination calls out USA on political prisoners

Tonight we will welcome human rights activist Efia Nwangaza and Jihad Abdul-Mumit. Jihad Abdul-Mumit, a former political prisoner, is the National Chairperson of The Jericho Movement, which filed a complaint about political prisoners in the United States with the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination at the United Nations. The Jericho Movement identified nineteen former members of the Black Panthers remain in prison following unfair trials who were targeted by the FBI's illegal counter-intelligence program which worked with law enforcement agencies across the country and police departments to assassinate, discredit and/or frame members of the Black Panther Party for Self Defense.

The Jericho Movement also sponsored the trip of Efia Nwangaza who submitted a report to the UN Committee on behalf of the Malcolm X Center for Self-Determination.

Demonstrators have restarted their protests in Ferguson, Missouri in connection to the murder of Michael Brown by Ferguson cop Darren Wilson. Some of those demonstration announced that this is the beginning of a new human rights revolution in the United States.

Rosa Clemente, an activist and former Green Party VP candidate will speak to us about the police terrorism she and others suffered while protesting in Ferguson, Missouri on August 20,2014. She told Ebony online that "officers swooped in on us from all directions and locked us down. The threats, their eyes, postures, weaponry said it all: "We have the power, we don’t care how many cameras there are, we can do what we want and we will never have to be held accountable."

Russell Shoatz III speaks with us tonight about his father Russell Maroon Shoatz who is a political prisoner currently being tortured in prison after being convicted in a Kangaroo trial for killing a Philadelphia police officer in 1970. The Philadelphia police was notorious for its abuse of Black people in the city and worked directly directly with the FBI in its illegal COINTELPRO activities to frame, murder and otherwise eliminated members of Black liberation groups and others.

He has been held in solitary confinement since 1991 depsite a clean prison record and the United Nations designation that solitary confinement is a from of toruture. History of Revolutionary Young Lords Party

Tonight we are discussing the history of the Young Lords Party which started out as a Puerto Rican street youth gang as protection from violent racist attacks in white neighborhoods and police oppression. The street gang would evolve into a revolutionary Puerto Rican nationalist group that partnered with the Black Panther Party and worked in solidarity within communities of non-white people to administer survival programs for the poor. Shujaa Graham, The origins of “Black August” and Prison Movements

Shujaa Graham was born in Lake Providence, Louisiana, and grew up on a plantation in the segregated South of the 1950s. He moved to Southern California where he experienced the Watts Riots and police occupation and violence in his community. As a very young man, he spent much of it in juvenile institutions and was enslaved at Soledad Prison when he turned 18 yrs-old.

While in prison, Shujaa taught himself to read and write and studied history and world affairs. He was mentored by the leadership of the Black Prison movement. He would grow to become a leader of the growing movement within the California prison system, just as the Black Panther Party expanded in the community.

In 1973, he was framed for the murder of a prison guard and was given the death penalty. Obviously, Mr. Graham was able to prove his innocence and free himself in spite of the system of justice as he says.

He will speak to us tonight on the origins of “Black August” and prison movements.

Shujaa Graham lives in Takoma Park, Maryland, with his partner, Phyllis Prentice, and both are active members of Witness to Innocence’s Board of Directors.

I have been informed by Sister Karima Al-Amin that Imam Jamil Al-Amin’s blood tests have come back, and he has been diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma ( Cancer of the plasma cells) If it was not for the pressure that has been put on Bureau of Prisons these results might have been overlooked by this uncaring, unsympathetic Prison Industrial Complex.

The Imam is gravely ill, and the Supermax Prison is no place for a man in his condition to be. We must continue the pressure on the Bureau of Prisons to move Imam Jamil to a prison medical facility.

This is a call to action, contact the BOP, and express your concern over Imam Jamil’s health, and the neglect that he has been experiencing as a result of being incarcerated in facility, and not being afforded the urgent care that is a basic human right.

John Potash did his graduate studies at Columbia University where he concentrated in community organizing. He was founding publisher/editor of Social Justice Action Quarterly a national social work school newspaper that lasted four years and won four honors in the Campus Alternative Journalism Awards. He also received a certification in acupuncture drug treatment at Mutulu Shakur s former clinic, Lincoln Detox, in the Bronx. While mostly working as an addictions counselor, he has published articles (Z, Covert Action, Baltimore Chronicle), poems and short stories.

John is also the author of "The FBI War on Tupac Shakur and Black Leaders" contains a wealth of names, dates and events detailing the use of COINTELPRO style tactics by the FBI against a generation of leftist political leaders and leftist musicians. Dhoruba Bin-Wahad, Noelle Hanrahan, Anne Lamb and Jenn Murnam

Dhoruba Bin-Wahad is an author, activist, former political prisoner, former NYC Black Panther Party leader and a co-founder of the Black Liberation Army. After hearing about COINTELPRO, which was run by the F.B.I. with the intent to murder, frame and imprison Black and other leftist leaders, Bin-Wahad filled a lawsuit that led to the release of 300,000 pages of documents regarding COINTELPRO and helped to obtain his release. Recently, Bin-Wahad became a victim of police violence while attempting to move into a new home in Clayton County, Georgia that was videotaped. The taped shows Bin-Wahad sitting on his porch talking with deputies before being snatched up, slammed face first into the brick wall of his home, and wrongly arrested.

Bin-Wahad along with other Clayton County community leaders have formed a group to address the violence he suffered at the hands of deputies and the violence the community suffers at the hands of officers. It was recently discovered that Al Sharpton's National Action Network and the NAACP legal defense arm met with the county Sherriff behind the communities back and held a secret meeting without informing members of the community. We will talk to Dhoruba Bin-Wahad or a member from his camp tonight.

Noelle Hanrahan of Prison Radio joins us for her second appearance on Political Prisoner Radio. She is most responsible for distributing the commentaries of political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal. She will share information concerning political prisoner Kevin Rashid Johnson. Johnson is the Minister of Defense of a prison chapter of the New Afrikan Black Panther Party, has been held in solitary confinement for decades, and is currently experiencing a medical emergency.

We will hold a moment of silence in recognition of Yuri Kochiyama, the Japanese-American activist who was a victim of America's concentration camps during WWII. She would become a life long activist and was close to the Black liberation movement while living in public housing in New York. It was there that she met Malcolm X. She was present when Malcolm was assassinated in the Audubon Ballroom and held his head in her lap as he lay dying from his gun shot wounds.

The United States military has sent troops to the jungles of Africa in an attempt to free 270 kidnapped Nigerian girls while it kidnaps black men, women and children from their communities, incarcerates them in prison labor camps where they are subjected to beatings, rape, torture and murder.
